Philip Francis Little Suite

Features an ultra-high four-poster bed, Newfoundland tartan stepping stool, and a pullout couch. The dresser in the room is original to Monroe House.

About Francis Little: Philip Francis Little became the colony of Newfoundland’s first prime minister in 1855. As the first official leader, Little’s largest obstacle was to protect Newfoundland’s fishery and territory from being bartered away by Britain.

Little demanded the British give the Newfoundland legislature a say in any negotiations regarding her resources, and the eventual concession of these rights by the English colonial office became Little’s greatest legacy.

Wanting to leave politics on this high note, Little accepted an appointment to the Supreme Court. Within a decade Little moved to Ireland, where he fathered 10 children and made great strides for the home rule movement there. He never returned to Newfoundland, and died in Ireland in 1897.
