About Sir Frederick Carter: Frederick Carter, 4th Prime Minister of Newfoundland, was a well-liked and popular politician who detested the religious divisions between the Protest majority and Catholic minority that plagued both politics and society in Newfoundland. Carter was a Protestant. Although this was severely criticized at the time, many have noted it, in the context of the mid 19th century, as a sensible and realistic move.
Carter retired from politics to the Supreme Court in 1878, leaving for his successor a strong party full of capable men who would lead the Conservatives into the next decade.
Many writers and historians have noted the high esteem which Carter was held by his peers - both political friend and foe.
Carter resigned his position as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 1898 and died March 1st, 1900.
