Sir Robert Thorburn Suite

The Sir Robert Thorburn Suite features recovered historic chairs, wrought-iron bed with matching lamps and furniture. A cozy room with ample natural light.

About Sir Robert Thorburn: Sir Robert Thorburn was Colony’s premier from 1885-1889. Known for being active in the fight against joining Canada in confederation, Thorburn succeeded Sir William Whiteway by creating the New Party to represent the interests of the businessmen of St. John’s.

While in power, Thorburn turned away from the sectarian agendas that had plagued politics in Newfoundland and focused on building some of the most expensive public projects to date, including a branch rail line and an expensive road to Conception Bay that bears Thorburn’s name today.

In the 1889 election Thorburn was succeeded by his predecessor (Whiteway). He was reappointed to the Legislative Council and remained a member until his death in 1906.
